How to build your financial literacy

Understanding what’s behind the numbers is the key to building your financial literacy.

How can you do this?

Understanding what’s behind the numbers is like mastering a technique

When you master the technique of kicking a soccer ball, you can play short passes and long passes. You can take free-kicks and penalties. You have the confidence to find a gap, where others will not try.

When you understand what’s behind the numbers, you can understand data, reports, budgets and forecasts. When you come across financial jargon, you have the confidence to ask the right question.

Where do you start?

I have developed a Finance Quadrant to help operational leaders and their teams:

Knowing where you sit on the Finance Quadrant is the first step in building your financial literacy.

Over the next four newsletters I will be covering each of the quadrants.

Need help in understanding where you (and your team) sit on the Finance Quadrant?

Stay tuned.

One sporting stat

The US Tennis Open is about to enter its final stages this weekend. If you have been to the US Open, you have probably heard of the Honey Deuce cocktail. A combination of raspberry lemonade, vodka and a garnish of honeydew melon balls.

Last year 405,000 of these cocktails were sold. At US$22 a drink, that’s a cool US$8.9M in sales.
